CBN PoS Geotagging Policy: Benefits, Risks, and What It Means for Your Business
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has introduced a new PoS geotagging policy that is set to reshape how business owners and PoS agents operate across the country. If you own a PoS terminal, this policy directly affects your daily operations, from compliance deadlines to customer trust.
In this article, we’ll break down what the CBN PoS geotagging policy means, the benefits and risks for your business, and how to stay compliant.
What Is CBN’s PoS Geotagging Policy?
In August 2025, the CBN mandated that all existing PoSterminals must be geotagged within 60 days, while new PoS terminals must begeotagged before activation.
Simply put, geotagging means linking your PoS terminal to a specific location using GPS coordinates. This ensures that every transaction made through your terminal is traceable to where it physically occurred.
When you geotag your PoS terminal, it is registered to a fixed GPS location. That location becomes its “home base.”
Why CBN Introduced Geotagging for PoS Terminals?
The policy aims to:
Reduce fraud and illegal use of cloned PoS terminals
Improve transparency in financial transactions
Strengthen Nigeria’s payment infrastructure
Key Deadlines Business Owners Should Know
Existing PoS terminals must be geotagged within 60 days from the directive.
New PoS terminals must be geotagged before they can go live.
Non-compliance: Non-geotagged terminals risk deactivation by the CBN.
Benefits of CBN’s PoS Geotagging Policy for Business Owners
Stronger Fraud Prevention and Security
By tying transactions to a fixed location, CBN makes it harder for fraudsters to operate with cloned or stolen terminals.
Increased Trust with Customers and Banks
Geotagging boosts confidence among banks, customers, and regulators, showing your business runs a legitimate, traceable operation.
Easier Regulatory Compliance for Agents
For business owners planning to scale or access financing, compliance with CBN regulations strengthens your reputation and credibility.
Risks and Challenges of PoS Geotagging in Nigeria
Mobility Restrictions for PoS Agents
Field agents who operate in markets or door-to-door will face reduced mobility, as the terminal must stay near its registered location.
Possible Deactivation of Non-Compliant Terminals
Failure to geotag within the deadline could mean your PoS terminal gets shut down, halting your business.
Costs of Upgrading or Replacing PoS Devices
Older terminals without GPS capabilities may need upgrades or replacements, which could increase operating expenses.
The CBN PoS geotagging policy is a big shift for Nigeria’s payment ecosystem. While it comes with challenges, especially for mobile PoS agents, it also promises stronger security, more trust, and a better-regulated payment system.
For business owners, the key is to act fast, stay compliant, and use this as an opportunity to build customer trust.
